Supreme Court Rejects Gay Marriage Appeals

The Supreme Court in the US has struck down appeals against gay marriage in five states, it has been reported.

The states are Indiana, Oklahoma, Utah, Virginia and Wisconsin.

The ruling brings the number of states where same-sex marriage is now legal to 30, as well as the District of Columbia.

By rejecting the appeals, the court left intact rulings from the lower-court which had already struck down bans in the above states.

Following the ruling, Chad Griffin, president of Human Rights Campaign, is quoted in the media as saying: "Today is a joyous day for thousands of couples across America who will immediately feel the impact of today's Supreme Court action."

However, he added that the court needed to address the "complex and discriminatory patchwork of marriage laws" that remain.

"The only acceptable solution is nationwide marriage equality and we recommit to ourselves to securing that ultimate victory as soon as possible," he continued.
