The actor is thought to have recently popped the question to the actress and theatre director after he flew to Edinburgh to ask Ms Hunter's mother for her permission.
The news of the couple's engagement was confirmed by Cumberbatch's parents – who took out an advert in The Times newspaper. In the short classified ad in the 'marriages' section, the piece reads: "Mr B.T. Cumberbatch and Miss S.I. Hunter: The engagement is announced between Benedict, son of Wanda and Timothy Cumberbatch of London, and Sophie, daughter of Katharine Hunter of Edinburgh and Charles Hunter of London."
A spokesperson for the actor later said: "I am delighted to confirm this morning's announcement that Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter are engaged."
Cumberbatch, 38, and Hunter, 36, first met in 2009 when they starred opposite each other in Burlesque Fairytales, but they were only spotted together publicly in June this year when they attended the French Open.
