Last week, the actor revealed in a listing in The Times newspaper that he is to wed Ms Hunter.
While many praised his decision to announce the news in that way, he has insisted that he would have done the same whether he was famous or not. Explaining his choice to USA Today, the 38-year-old said: "It's what I would have done if I wasn't famous. It's a normal thing to do in my country. It was a way of telling our friends who we hadn't been able to tell before [they saw] some grainy shot of a ring on her finger."
Cumberbatch and Hunter, 36, first met in 2009 when they starred opposite each other in the film Burlesque Fairytales, but they were only spotted together publicly in June this year when they attended the French Open.
