87% Believe They Should Be Married By Age 40

A new survey has found that almost nine in 10 people in Britain feel they should be married by the time they are 40.

The research was commissioned by estate agents Purplebricks.com, which also looked at other stresses which affect people in life.

For example, 35% of respondents said they felt pressured to start a family, while 53% said "making a success of their career" was never far from their minds. A further two-thirds admitted they would feel a "failure" if they failed to own a home by the time they reached the age of 3. In fact, 55% believe they should have bought a property of their own by the age of 30, with 66% considering it a failure if they haven't.

Michael Bruce, founder of Purplebrick.com, said: "These are interesting findings which certainly represent the change in times. As house prices have rocketed in recent years there seems to have been a shift in people's priorities with many choosing to focus on their professional life first, so that they are in a better financial position for settling down to buy a house and have a family."
