According to reports, the Dutchman – who has not been named – planned to surprise his partner by getting into the crane and then descending in front of her bedroom. It is understood he wanted to sing her a song before he asked for her hand in marriage.
However, the crane he was using was not secured and it ended up crashing into a neighbour's home.
The roof was initially damaged but when attempts to right the crane were made, it fell again causing further damage. Local Dutch media have said additional homes nearby were evacuated as a result of the incident. No one was injured.
Despite the proposal not going quite according to plan, the woman is reported to have said yes.
