Study Unveils Worst Dating Mishaps

A new study has revealed the worst mishaps that can happen when on a date.

Just a few of the fears making the list include being stood up, spilling food over yourself and realising you have nothing in common with a potential partner.

Commissioned by Bookatable, the poll looked at dating etiquette and found other awkward moments could occur when it comes time to pay the bill – especially when just under half of women felt a man should pay for the meal, while just over half of men felt they should go Dutch.

In addition, while three-fifths of Valentine's dinner dates are booked by men, half of those polled confessed they would ditch their date on Valentine's if they were 'ugly' or 'boring'.

Acting like a gentlemen is key however, with seven in 10 women, saying this is the fastest way for a man to win their heart. Just a tenth of men feel this is important. It's therefore probably not surprising that 17% of women feel chivalry is dead.

Elsewhere, 37% of men said they would be willing to pay more for a meal – if they were guaranteed sex afterwards, Just a sixth of women were in agreement. Of the men polled, a bold fifth said they make sure they know the location of the nearest hotel before they book a meal at a restaurant, just incase they 'get lucky', but 18% of women said they are unimpressed when a partner invited them back to their home or hotel prematurely.

Another mortifying moment is flatulence. Just over a quarter of respondents named burping as the most embarrassing thing that could happen when one a date. One in five women disagreed, however, saying the worst mishap is when a date moves in for an unwanted kiss.

The study found the top ten 'awkward' dating moments to be:

1.When someone doesn't turn up.

2.When you spill food all down your clothes.

3.When someone 'excuses themselves' mid-way through a date.

4.When the other person burps.

5.When the waiter brings the bill.

6.When someone goes in for a premature kiss.

7.When the other person invites you back to their flat or a hotel.

8.When you catch the eye of someone else in the venue and wish you were with them.

9.When you have to be excused to the bathroom for a while.

10.When you realise you've got nothing in common.

Joe Steele, CEO of Bookatable, said: "Our research reveals that people have varying opinions when it comes to dating etiquette, but what is clear is that good manners are still a valued commodity when it comes to dining at a restaurant.

"Everyone clearly has different standards and beliefs on the topic of paying the bill and finding their opposite attractive – finding a common ground on these types of issues is often the key to a compatible relationship."
