The Emmerdale actress confirmed the news in an interview with The Sun's TV Biz.
She said: "We've had a lovely, healthy baby boy. He arrived just before my 40th birthday, which was the best present."
Having only announced her pregnancy in January, Atkins, who plays Charity Dingle in the soap, recorded a special video message for her fans. In the video, she said: "I do have a mixture of emotions going around because obviously I'm leaving for a while.
"I am leaving. Probably for about a year because I'm leaving to have a baby which is really exciting. I will miss Emmerdale so much but it is a new little journey in my life that I'm taking on now.
"I can't wait to come back – hopefully within a year."
This is the first child for the actress and her partner Tom. No further details have been released.
