According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP), the allegation of fraud relates to sums of money which he regularly took from his numerous girlfriends. The man, who is from the Hunan province, hit the headlines last month after he was in an accident and taken to hospital. Doctors contacted his loved ones – and all 17 of his girlfriends turned up to be at his bedside. It was only here when the women discovered they had all been in a relationship with the same man.
The SCMP has said that after meeting, the women set up an online chat group named "revenge alliance". In this group, they realised that their partner, who has only been identified as Mr Yuan, would ask some of them for money each month.
Yuan is also alleged to have fathered a child with one woman, and was currently planning a wedding to another.
