1.3m Brits To Attend Hen, Stag Parties This Year

Over one million people in Britain will attend a hen or stag party this year, according to the latest figures released by the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA).

Some 1.3 million Brits are expected to celebrate a hen or stag do – many of which will take place overseas. This option was found to be most popular among the 25 to 34 age bracket, with 7% of men and 2% of women choosing to travel abroad for their parties in 2014.

Taking the top spot for hen parties abroad is Marbella, with Barcelona and Benidorm rounding out the top three. Dublin and Amsterdam followed in fourth and fifth place, respectively. Meanwhile, Dubai has been named as a place to watch for hens planning a party.

For stags, Prague topped the overseas destination, ahead of Barcelona and Benidorm. Budapest and Riga made up the rest of the top five.

With regards to the top UK destinations, London is the first choice for women, ahead of Newcastle, Brighton, Edinburgh and Manchester. Newcastle was the top spot for stag parties though, followed by Bournemouth, Bristol, Edinburgh and London.

When it comes to travelling overseas, three fifths are male, with hens more likely to keep their celebrations at home. Women are also more likely to be cost-conscious when it comes to planning their party. They will choose a higher standard of accommodation than their stag counterparts and spend more time researching where to go and what to do on the trip in general. While hens will share their celebration with a more mixed group – including their mother and mother-in-law – stags are more likely to go in a larger group, and for a longer period of time. They are also more likely to opt for basic accommodation, preferring to spend their money on activities and nights out.

The survey at ABTA also looked at popular hen and stag activities, and found there has been in increase in the number of hen parties booking the more 'traditional' stag options, such as go-karting and paintballing. However, cocktail making remains the most popular activity for women. As for the men, bubble football is now said to be the most popular stag activity.

Victoria Bacon, Head of Brand and Business Development at ABTA, said: "Stag and hen parties have grown in size and scale in recent years and we would advise anyone booking one of these important holidays to do so with a reputable provide. There is an incredible range of destinations and activities out there to suit any pre-wedding party."
