Customer Data Stolen From Dating Website

Customer data has been stolen of users from dating website Ashley Madison.

The website is aimed at married people who wish to have an affair.

According to reports, the website was hacked and those behind the incident had obtained customer information, including "all the customers' secret sexual fantasies and matching credit card transactions."

The operator for the site confirmed an "intrusion" had taken place, but refused to comment on the extent. It is thought some user's account data had been published online.

Information stolen by the hackers – called the Impact Team – is thought to include the real names and addresses of the site's users, as well as those who had previously paid to "delete" their accounts.

In a report, the BBC said Ashley Madison would allow people to delete their profile from the site for free with immediate effect.

It was previously £15 for a "full delete" of a user profile, yet it has been alleged that some personal information is still kept on users despite them paying the fee.

In response, Ashley Madison said: "Contrary to current media reports, and based on accusations posted online by a cyber criminal, the 'paid-delete' option offered by AshleyMadison.com does in fact remove all information related to a member’s profile and communications activity.

"The process involves a hard-delete of a requesting user's profile, including the removal of posted pictures and all messages sent to other system users' email boxes. This option was developed due to specific member requests for just such a service, and designed based on their feedback.

"As our customers' privacy is of the utmost concern to us, we are now offering our full-delete option free to any member, in light of today's news."

The company added that it had been able to secure its websites and "close the unauthorized access points."
