Woman Gives Birth On Board LÉ Niamh Navy Vessel

A woman has given birth to a baby girl on board an Irish naval vessel involved in the humanitarian rescue operation in the Mediterranean.

The baby, named Destiny, was born after the mother went into labour four weeks premature.

Baby Destiny was delivered by medics Paul O'Connell and Conor Kilbride.

At 6:18pm, two Italian doctors were embarked from an Italian Coast Guard vessel. The mother and baby were transferred to the same vessel at 8:30pm and are said to be doing well.

The LÉ Niamh is now transporting 369 people to Palermo which is due to arrive today, 22 July.
