2 In 3 Parents Say Children Prefer Playing 'Traditional Games'

A new survey has found that a majority of children prefer to play traditional games, or those that have been passed down from their parents' childhood.

The study, commissioned by Groupon, involved 1,000 parents, and asked them about the activities they would like to partake in with their children this summer. Day trips were the favourite with a majority of parents, with a day at the beach, a visit to the zoo and going to a museum topping the list.

Interestingly, however, traditional childhood games also featured, with 68% of parents admitting that their kids prefer playing the games they have passed down from when they were a child, as opposed to playing with an iPad. Traditional games included, hopscotch, building a den and learning how to fly a kite.

Dr Richard Woolfson, a child psychologist, is quoted as saying: "Outdoor family activities provide a rich source of enjoyment for children and parents and re-invigorate family relationships.

"The research confirms parents recognise the psychological benefits and play value of outdoor summer activities, and have happy memories of these street games and outdoor activities from their own childhood.

"Summer is the ideal time for families to turn off their smartphones, lock up their iPads, and go outside. The small effort involved in arranging these outdoor activities will bring immediate psychological benefits for parents and children."
