Pope Francis Unveils Marriage Reforms

Pope Francis has revealed reforms which will make it easier for Roman Catholics to get annulments and remarry within the Church.

Currently, the Church does not recognise divorce, and for a couple to separate, they must have their marriage annulled – by demonstrating how it was problematic from the outset.

The reforms announced today, 8 September, would allow access to procedures free of charge and fast track decisions, as well as removing automatic appeals. These procedures have previously said to be expensive and bureaucratic.

Another change would see a reduction in the approval of Church tribunals regarding annulments. For example, Catholics previously needed approval from two Church tribunals. The amendment would reduce this to one, but appeals would still be allowed. Meanwhile, the new 'fast track' system would allow bishops to grant annulments directly – if both spouses request it.

Within the Catholic Church, without an annulment, those who divorce and marry again are viewed as adulterers.
