The actor's confession comes just months after he tied the knot with his girlfriend Hannah Bagshawe.
Speaking to E! News, the 33-year-old said he has lost the item of jewellery as he filmed his latest movie, The Danish Girl. In the film, Redmayne plays a transgender woman and the role required him to get into costume.
He told the media outlet: "When you're filming you have to take off these things and I actually lost my wedding ring so this is a new wedding ring that is being worn. I was pinning it to my costume every day and one day it disappeared."
He was then asked how his wife reacted to the news, and he admitted it was difficult, but: "I sort of skirted around it, but anyhow, I like the new one."
Redmayne and Bagshawe dated for two years before announcing their engagement last summer. They married in a small and private ceremony at Babington House in December 2014.
