Fine Gael Praises Marriage Bill Approval

Jerry Buttimer, Fine Gael TD for Cork South Central, and the Chair of Fine Gael LGBT, has described the approval of Ireland's Marriage Bill 2015 as an "historic" move. He added that it is another step in the process which could see the first same-sex marriages taking place in thecountry before the end of the year.

In a statement, he said: "This bill, which has today been approved by Government, will update Ireland's marriage laws on foot of the historic Marriage Equality referendum and implements the strong will of the Irish people.

"Minister for Justice, Frances Fitzgerald will now introduce the Bill into the Dáil next week, meaning that the first same-sex marriages can take place before the end of the year.

"The Marriage Bill 2015 will enable couples to marry without distinction as to their sex, as provided for in Article 41.4 of the Constitution which was approved by the people in the historic Marriage Equality referendum on 22nd May 2015.

"The Bill will recognise same-sex marriages entered into in other countries and includes a provision allowing a couple to convert a notification of their intention to enter civil partnership into a notification of their intention to marry."

He also welcomed an announcement by Minister Fitzgerald which confirmed arrangements are also being made, in conjunction with the Department of Social Protection, to reduce the fees for civil partners wishing to marry from €200 to €50.

"I'm delighted that this important legislation has taken another key step towards enactment and it's my hope that we will see Ireland's first same-sex marriages take place before Christmas," he concluded.
