Legislation for same-sex marriage in Ireland has came before the Dáil.
It follows a referendum on the issue in May of this year, when the country voted to change existing legislation to allow same-sex couples to marry.
The words: "Marriage may be contracted in accordance with law by two persons without distinction as to their sex" was voted to be added to the Constitution.
The Marriage Bill 2015 will enable Ireland's first same-sex marriages to take place later this year, it has been reported.
Frances Fitzgerald, Ireland's Minister for Justice and Equality, has said the Act could commence within a fortnight of its enactment.
While couples were previously allowed to enter into a civil partnership, marriage was against the law. For couples who are already in civil partnerships, the new legislation will allow them to marry without dissolving their civil partnership. Similarly, for those who have given notice of their intention to enter a civil partnership, they will be able to convert it into a notice of intention to marry.
