Ireland's Seanad Passes Marriage Bill

A law to allow same-sex marriages to be held in Ireland has passed through the Oireachtas. This means that the Marriage Bill is ready to be signed into law.

Once a commencement order is signed, which could take place within the next two months, marriage ceremonies can begin.

Welcoming the announcement, Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald said: "Marriage, a cherished institution has been adopted for a new era, but retains its fundamental character.

"Importantly, as a result of the Constitutional amendment couples across this country will gain the protection of the Constitution and its defence of their rights.

"I would say that on the 22nd of May, 2015, the green jersey turned rainbow."

In May 2015, Ireland voted to legalise same-sex marriage following a referendum.
