Under the #MarRef hashtag, for example, there were more than 400,000 tweets sent between the time the polls opened at 7am on 22 May, until 7pm on 23 May, when the result was announced.

In addition, more than 72,000 tweets were also posted with the hashtag #hometovote – these tweets were from people who travelled back to Ireland in order to vote in the referendum.

Following May's referendum, same-sex marriage was made legal in Ireland last month.
