The former One Direction star made the comments during a recent interview with Billboard magazine. The 22-year-old, who has recently been linked to model Gigi Hadid, said he liked "chunky" girls, and those with "intellectual conversation".
He told the publication: "I need a challenge. Also, I like girls that are a bit chunky in certain areas – the nice areas. I like a fuller woman.
"I enjoy an intellectual conversation as well, where someone can construct a sentence beyond what hair and makeup they're wearing, and talk about something political or about the world. I like an opinion."
Malik and Edwards, also 22, announced their engagement in August 2013 after more than a year of dating. Throughout their romance, Malik was accused of cheating on his partner with a number of women. In August 2015, the couple confirmed their relationship had ended. Their split is not believed to have been amicable.
