The couple were together for three years and have one child together, a 22-month-old son called Winston.
According to The Sun newspaper, the actor has moved out of the family's London home and into an apartment nearby in order to remain close to his son.
A source is quoted by the publication as saying: "They've kept it very quiet. It's very sad that this has happened while Idris is experiencing the highest points of his professional career and they can't celebrate it with each other."
Elba and Garth started dating in early 2013, with the make-up artist falling pregnant shortly into their relationship. Elba is also a father to 13-year-old daughter Isan, from his former marriage to Dormowa Sherman.
