A new study has found that one in 14 couples over the age of 50 have renewed – or are considering renewing – their wedding vows.
Of the 8,000 people polled by Saga insurance, it was revealed that on average, those renewing their vows have been married for almost 30 years. A further four in 10 over 50s admitted they are considering renewing their wedding vows after more than 40 years together.
Of the respondents who had already renewed their vows, or were contemplating doing so, a majority were retired and would use the additional time to organise a wedding. When it comes to the ceremony, an average of £1,000 is spent by the couples – and does not include the expense of a second honeymoon.
Comparing their first and second weddings, couples over the age of 50 said they had around 60 people join them on their big day the first time around; but this number falls to just 25 for the renewal ceremony.
Interestingly, one in 10 couples in the West Midlands and East Anglia have either renewed their vows or are wanting to do so. This contrasts with people living in Scotland, who are the least likely to want to renew their wedding vows with their partner.
Commenting on the findings, Paul Green, director of communications at Saga, said: "Renewing your wedding vows can be a great way to celebrate your marriage and give you a chance to relive your special day with children and grandchildren; and a great excuse for a party and a romantic break a deux."
