The 44-year-old made the emotional confession during an interview on The Dr Oz Show.
The actress, who rose to fame in Beverly Hills, 90210, and Charmed, was diagnosed with breast cancer in August 2015. Currently, she is taking medication to battle the disease, but it prevents her from getting pregnant.
Speaking to Dr Oz, she said: "I'm 44 and my husband and I wanted children."
Doherty has been married to photographer Kurt Iswarienko since 2011, and he says his wife's diagnosis brought them closer together. He is quoted as saying: "For us, it has brought us closer together. It's one of those times you get to test your mettle as a married couple."
It is unclear if the couple will look to adoption, but Doherty is due to undergo surgery soon.
