According to E! magazine, the 39-year-old actress made an appearance during a panel at the South by Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas, on Sunday. She was discussing other celebrities who use social media to refer to their private lives, whereas she prefers to keep hers away from the spotlight. For example, she said that while some use social media to deny reports, she avoids talking about her personal life at all during interviews or social media.
"I think – and this is something Reese Witherspoon has talked about a lot," she told the panel. "It's a little different for me because I don't talk about my personal life.
"Social media has actually been great for [other celebrities'] relationships with the weeklies or the gossip sites because people say things and they say, 'That's not true. Just so you know, that's BS.'
"So, I'm thinking in some ways, it's been great because people are able to maintain their voice."
However, she added: "If I don't talk about my personal life, it means I don't talk about my personal life. That means not only did I not tell you when I was getting married, it also means if somebody has rumours about what's going on in my marriage, I don't refute them, because I don't talk about my personal life."
Washington is married to former NFL cornerback star Nnamdi Asomugha. They married in June 2013, and have one child together, a daughter named Isabelle who was born in April 2014.
