According to Dr Anne Schuchat, from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a wider range of birth defects have been linked to the virus.
It is thought the impact of the virus could also be greater on the US than initially predicted as the mosquitos who carry the virus could travel to more states.
Speaking at a White House briefing on Monday, Dr Schuchat is quoted in the media as saying: "Most of what we've learned is not reassuring. Everything we know about this vidus seems to be scarier than we initially thought."
Since the outbreak of the virus almost a year ago in Brazil, the CDC has said there have been 346 confirmed cases in the continental US.
