According to The Sun, the couple's relationship was short-lived, but they tried to keep it quiet from everyone as they didn't want it to cause any issues during filming of the BBC drama.
A source is quoted by the newspaper as saying: "They were clearly attracted to each other so it wasn't a surprise, but they kept their romance quiet. They didn't want it to cause problems on the show."
However, they added: "They hadn't been seeing each other long when Paul flew off the handle, and they had a fiery row."
The C-Word was based on a book by Lisa Lynch which discussed her experience of terminal breast cancer. Sheridan played the role of Lisa in the drama, while Nicholls was cast as her husband, Pete.
