Statistics Reveal Abortion Rates Are 'Fairly Constant'

New figures released by the Department of Health have suggested that abortion rates in England and Wales have remained "fairly constant".

In 2015, there were 184,571 recorded abortions. This is a 0.7% increase from the previous year, but 0.3% lower than 2005 statistics.

The report also found that 38% of women who had an abortion in 2015 had also had a previous termination. This figure has risen from 32% over the past decade.

However, abortion rates were found to have fallen for women under the age of 30, but had steadily risen for women over the age of 30. The study said abortion rates for women aged 30 to 34 have increased from 14.5 per 1,000 women in 2005 to 17.1 in 2015.
