Zika Virus 'Could Spread To Europe'

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has said the Zika virus could spread to Europe by the summer. However, the organisation stressed that the likelihood of an outbreak is low.

It is understood the UK is low risk, while countries with a moderate risk include France, Greece, Italy and Spain. Russia and Georgia are said to be among the areas most at risk.

The Zika virus, which is transferred via Aedes mosquitoes, has been linked to an increase in brain defects in babies.

The WHO report suggests there is a greater risk of the virus spreading in the summer as the mosquitoes become more active. Some 18 countries are thought to have a moderate likelihood of seeing Zika cases while the UK is one of 36 countries which have a low, very low or no likelihood of transmission.

Dr Zsuzsanna Jakab, at the WHO, is quoted as saying: "We call particularly on countries at higher risk to strengthen their national capacities and prioritise the activities that will prevent a large Zika outbreak."
