Appeal Over NI's Abortion Laws Begins

An appeal regarding abortion laws in Northern Ireland are to be heard from today, it has been reported.

The Court of Appeal will look at the region's laws in an appeal that is expected to last for three days. It comes after the Attorney General and Department of Justice appealed a High Court decision late last year to grant a judicial review into termination laws in NI.

The decision for a judicial review was submitted by the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission, with the court ruling that NI's abortion laws were "incompatible" with the European Convention on Human Rights.

Currently, legislation surrounding abortion is different in NI to the rest of the UK. The Abortion Act 1967 was never extended to Northern Ireland. A termination is only allowed in the region if a woman's life is at risk, or if there is a risk of permanent and serious damage to her mental or physical health.
