When Should You Take A Newborn On Holiday?

A new study has looked into when is the best time for parents to take their newborn on their first holiday.

The research, conducted by sunshine.co.uk, involved 2,199 parents – all of whom had their first child within the last five years. They were first asked 'How soon after the birth of your first child did you take your baby on holiday abroad?'

53% admitted that they had not yet done so, while 21% said they had taken their baby abroad within a year of his or her birth. Some 16% waited until their child was between the ages of one and three, while 10% said they waited until their child was between the ages of four and five.

However, of the parents who had taken their newborn on holiday abroad within the first year also admitted that at least one of the child's grandparents had joined them for the trip. A further 26% said that friends were present on their baby's first holiday abroad; just 20% of respondents said it was them and their baby.

With regards to the cost, the average amount was found to be £2,950 when taking a baby on their first holiday.

Participants were then asked where they had visited for their child's first holiday. Mainland Spain topped the list (16%), closely followed by Majorca (12%), the south of France (10%), Tenerife (8%) and Portugal (6%).

89% of those parents had travelled by plane for the trip, with 55% who took a holiday within the first year of their child's birth saying it was "easier than expected".

Sue Anderson, from sunshine.co.uk, said: "The idea of taking a small baby on holiday, especially if a flight is involved, can be daunting. As long as you're really prepared, you can have a great holiday.

"We were not surprised that many parents choose to take their child's grandparents or some friends on holiday with them for baby's first trip, because it can enable mum and dad to have a bit of down time if they're so kind as to volunteer to look after the little one."
