Desmond Wilcox died in 2000 and the pair were married for 23 years.
Speaking on Good Morning Britain, Rantzen, aged 76, said: "I lived on tea and biscuits for ages afterwards. I lost my confidence. I though 'Who would want to spend time with me now I'm on my own?' I know how loneliness can lead to physical and mental ill-health."
However, she revealed she is open to start a new relationship and even appeared on Channel 4's First Dates.
She was paired up with Irish legal lawyer John, but she admitted there didn't seem to be a connection between them.
She said: "He was almost too good for me. He was a charming Irish man and I have a wicked side to me. I think maybe I'm too naughty."
