The television presenter is currently expecting her first child with her husband Charlie, but admitted that becoming pregnant was “stressful” after she discovered her mother had gone through an early menopause.
Jones, who is 39, said the discovery prompted her into realising that she really wanted a family of her own.
Speaking on ITV's This Morning, she explained: "I, like many people quite naïve, was aware that age impacts fertility, but you don't realise to what extent until you start looking into it. I've always known I wanted a family."
She revealed that her own mother went through the menopause at the age of 44, leaving Alex with just a few years left to have children.
"Mum has never put any pressure on us to have children," she stressed, "but she probably thought, 'She doesn't need to know about it until she's thinking about [children] or if she thinks about it.' But I was shocked, it's incredibly young."
When it comes to starting her own family, she continued: "Nobody leaves it late on purpose. It's all about timing, when you meet your partner, when there's a gap in your career.
"For me, family was always the number one priority, but I didn't meet my husband until later on and we wanted to get married first. Faced with what mum said and having tests to see how inside was looking, it was quite stressful."
Jones announced her pregnancy earlier this month. The couple tied the knot on New Year's Eve last year in Cardiff.
