Vote On Same-Sex Marriage Blocked In Australia

Opposition MPs in Australia have blocked plans by the Prime Minister to hold a national vote on legalising same-sex marriage.

Malcolm Turnbull has said he wants to hold a non-binding ballot in 2017 to decide whether current laws should change, however, opponents have said that the ballot is a waste of money. It has been said it would cost around $160 million Australian dollars (£95m), of which includes equal funding for the 'yes' and 'no' campaigns.

Without support from the opposition, the plans for a vote are unlikely to pass the senate.

Labor has said parliament should make the decision.
