Married Couples Not Applying For Tax Allowance – HMRC

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has said that less than a quarter of couples eligible for marriage tax allowance in the UK have claimed it.

The allowance is worth £220 in 2016/17. However, couples who are eligible are able to back-date a claim for last year as well, meaning a total of £432.

It is understood some 4.2 million couples could claim the allowance, but only one million have done so. It allows one half of a married couple transfer part of their tax-free allowance to their partner, but one of the partners is not allowed to earn more than £11,000 (the personal allowance), while the other needs to be paying income tax at the basic rate.

The tax perk was introduced in April 2015 to incentivise marriage.
