'High Levels Of Stress' For Midwives

The latest NHS Employers annual staff survey has revealed that almost two thirds of NHS staff work unpaid overtime each week, and have come into work in the last three months – despite not feeling well enough to perform their duties.

Other findings include 38% dissatisfied/very dissatisfied with their pay, and 20% dissatisfied/very dissatisfied with opportunities to work flexibly.

A total of 423,000 NHS staff responded anonymously to the survey.

Jon Skewes, Director for Policy, Employment Relations and Communications, Royal College of Midwives (RCM), said: "While the results of this survey show there have been some small improvements, if you dig a little deeper it's clear that fundamentally organisations are relying on the goodwill of midwives, MSWs and other NHS staff to plug the gaps in our national health service.

"This is leading to high levels of stress, burn out and the growing levels of disillusionment and dissatisfaction are causing midwives to leave midwifery."

He added that the RCM hears from members about the pressures they are under as a result of understaffing.

He continued: "They tell us about their frustrations and fears about delivering a high quality safe maternity service with inadequate levels of staffing."
