Liam Payne has defended his relationship with singer Cheryl and their 10-year age gap.
Appearing on the Radio 1 Breakfast Show on Friday morning, the 23-year-old singer was promoting his new music, but conversation quickly turned to his romance with Cheryl. The couple first met in 2008 when Payne auditioned for The X Factor; it was the same year that Cheryl was a judge on the show. At the time, Payne was 14, while Cheryl was 24.
In late 2015, it was rumoured that the pair were in a relationship – they later confirmed the rumours and last month, they welcomed their first child together. However, during Friday's interview with host Nick Grimshaw, Payne was asked about his first meeting with his now-girlfriend, to which he replied: "She doesn't like to talk about that."
He then promised to talk about the situation with Grimshaw "in private".
His comments come just after he revealed that Cheryl had almost ended their romance shortly after they had started dating.
Speaking to The Sun, he explained that one of the songs on his new album is about his relationship with Cheryl.
He admitted: "There's one song that is basically a phone call that happened between me and her when she was about to let it go.
"This is a long time ago. And it's basically me trying to cling on and say: 'No, no, no, it's all going to work out. Don't worry about it, give it time.'"
