No. Of Maternity Ward Closures Published

Data obtained by the Labour Party has suggested that more than 40% of maternity wards in England had to close to expectant mothers at least once in 2016.

According to reports, in response to a Freedom of Information request, 42 out of 96 trusts confirmed that they had shut maternity wards temporarily on 382 occasions. The most common reasons for the closures were said to be down to not enough staff and not enough beds for the mothers-to-be.

It is understood that some of the closures were overnight, while others lasted more than 24 hours. Overall, 40 of the 136 hospital trusts in England did not respond to requests for information.
