Rio Ferdinand has opened up about his new relationship with Kate Wright.
The former footballer appeared on ITV's This Morning and talked about the romance with hosts Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby.
After months of speculation earlier this year, the 38-year-old confirmed in July that he was in a relationship with former TOWIE star Kate Wright. Rio was previously married to Rebecca. The couple married in 2009, but in May 2015, Rebecca lost her battle with cancer leaving behind Rio and their three children; Lorenz, 11, Tate, nine, and six-year-old Tia.
For the first time, the sporting star has revealed how he tried to cope with his grief following Rebecca's death and how this new relationship has given him another chance at happiness.
He told the hosts: "I went and saw the widowers, they opened up about a few things. I went and saw Darren Clarke, the golfer, and there were so many parallels in our and he said, 'Look you will be happy again'.
"To hear that from someone who had gone through the same steps as me helped me open up. Now especially after that meeting that made me feel that there is an opportunity to be happy again. I'm happy again, and in a relationship and it's going well."
The former footballer added that his new relationship with Kate had a positive effect on his family.
"The kids are also happy, they deserve to be after going through tragedy in the last few years of their life. There's not been one stage of going into this relationship where they've not been involved," he admitted.
"As long as they feel they are involved and in the conversation I think there's a chance they can reach happiness."
