The RCPCH said that the paper 'Increasing admissions to paediatric intensive care units in England and Wales: more than just rising a birth rate' published in the Archives of Disease in Childhood, highlights the growing pressure on paediatric intensive care and provides a sharp context for funding cuts.
Dr Peter-Marc Fortune at the RCPCH said that it was clear that expectations had shifted: "This is most obviously seen where decisions are being made about the balance between intensive interventions and palliation. We are increasingly treating children with complex disease more aggressively with a focus on prolonging their lives, with less certain expectations regarding their potential for improvement and quality of life."
He added that some tough questions now need to be asked about the direction of paediatric intensive care: "[Is] this the right path, has it gone far enough, or perhaps has it gone too far? Whatever the result, appropriate resources must then follow to allow both the medical and social care to be delivered."

Society needs to have an open and honest debate on the role of paediatric intensive care units, argued the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) in its response to a new study that has exposed the mounting demands on the units.The RCPCH said that the paper 'Increasing admissions to paediatric intensive care units in England and Wales: more than just rising a birth rate' published in the Archives of Disease in Childhood, highlights the growing pressure on paediatric intensive care and provides a sharp context for funding cuts.
