Parents In Germany Can Register Babies As 'Third Gender'

It has been reported that the top court in Germany has ruled that parents in the country should be allowed to register their babies as third gender.

The ruling said that there must be the option of registering a gender that is neither male nor female on birth certificates. It makes Germany the first country in Europe to enable parents to designate their intersex offspring as a third gender.

According to media reports, the case was brought by a registered female whose chromosome test confirmed they were neither sex.

The constitutional court in Karlsruhe has now given the government until the end of 2018 to pass a law specifying a category other than male or female. It added that current regulations on civil status were discriminatory against intersex people.

A spokesperson for the German government said it would comply with the ruling.

Intersex people are born with a mixture of male and female sex characteristics. The UN says the condition affects up to 1.7% of the world's population.
