Increase In Domestic Abuse Against Men

A charity has said that the number of reports of domestic abuse against men has increased.

Amen, which helps male victims of domestic abuse, said that last year it received more than 5,000 allegations of abuse.

Most of the abuse reported was of a verbal or psychological nature, according to the charity's annual report for 2016, but reports of physical, social and economic abuse were also recorded.

In 2016, Amen said that over 3,700 claims of verbal and psychological abuse were made; this includes reports of name-calling, being threatened with violence, financial control, constant criticism, being stalked and harassed, physical abuse, and being isolated from family and friends.

In addition, 819 claims of physical abuse were recorded, representing a rise of more than 50% on 2015. These reports included men being bitten, kicked, punched, beaten and stabbed.

Overall, the charity recorded a 35% increase in its activity rate last year compared to 2015. Their activity rate includes emails, phonecalls, one-to-one sessions and assisting with court appointments.

Amen's confidential helpline is available Monday – Friday, from 9am to 5pm: 046 – 9023 718.
