George Shelley's Mother Struggled With His Sexuality

George Shelley has spoken of his mother's struggle when he told her he was gay, but insisted she is proud of him now.

The 25-year-old singer told his family of his sexuality in 2016, and said his mum's first reaction was to worry about what people might think.


Speaking to Sir Ian McKellen for Gay Times magazine, he said: "I guess my mum…it's a difficult subject still. She's proud of me now.

"But the first thing she said to me was, 'What am I going to tell my friends?' It was a lack of understanding."

The former Union J singer added that his mum now thinks its "pretty cool" to have a gay son, and has called for better education of the "real world" so young people can accept themselves for who they really are.
