The staff at Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) believe the care administered to children to promote human welfare in foreign countries would not be possible without such people, and called for more training for those working in these environments.
Most people who respond to crisis events are usually healthcare workers without paediatric critical care training, yet will face patients in grave situations, often without the peer support available in intensive care units.
If necessary, relief teams should be brought in to provide training, according to the study.
It also found that in situations with limited resources, many children become critically ill due to the high burdens of illness that would otherwise be preventable, and then require immediate life-saving interventions.
