Bohemian Rhapsody And The Favourite Lead LGBT+ Oscar Nominations

Two 2018 movies centred on LGBT+ issues, 'Bohemian Rhapsody' and 'The Favourite' have received several Oscar nominations for the upcoming Academy Awards.

The Favourite is a comedy drama based on the scandalous love affairs between Queen Anne and two women in the 18th century and was nominated for the accolade of Best Picture.

Olivia Colman was put forward for Best Actress, while Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz are both nominated for Best Supporting Actress.

The film's director Yorgos Lanthimos is also named for Best Director, adding to the film's total of ten potential Oscars.

Meanwhile, the semi-fictionalised biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, which was based on the life of Queen singer Freddie Mercury, also picked up a number of nominations despite receiving mixed reviews.

Rami Malek is tipped for Best Actor among the musical's five nominations which also include Best Picture.

Many have questioned the lack of focus the film places on the singer's gay relationships and battle against HIV/AIDS in the final years of his life.

Meanwhile, 'Green Book', a film based on the life of gay jazz pianist Don Shirley, is also nominated for three Academy Awards.
